The Alliance Debuts at Semicon China 2014

From March 18 to 20, 2014, the annual semiconductor industry event, SemiconChina 2014, was held in Shanghai. At this international trade show, the Materials Alliance collaborated with SEMI to set up a “Special Zone for the Integrated Circuit Materials Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance,” organizing member companies of the Alliance to participate and exchange ideas in a concentrated manner. The event effectively showcased the overall image of the materials industry and enhanced the Alliance’s influence within the industry. This also marked the first time that domestic integrated circuit materials enterprises participated in a major international event under the unified brand image of the Materials Alliance. On February 26, 2014, the Integrated Circuit Materials Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance (“the Alliance”) held its third council meeting of the first term in Shanghai. Academician Wang Xi, Chairman of the Alliance and Deputy Head of the National “02” Special Project Overall Expert Group, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. The meeting was chaired by Shi Ying, Secretary-General of the Alliance, who also presented the report titled “2013 Work Summary and 2014 Work Plan and Vision of the Alliance.” Nearly 60 representatives from the Alliance’s member units attended the meeting. The meeting summarized the Alliance’s work in 2013 and focused on discussing the 2014 work plan and vision. Building on its strong start, the Alliance will continue to strengthen its involvement in various national and industry plans and programs.

The “Mass Production and Application Engineering Project for Key Equipment and Materials for Domestic Integrated Circuits” Has Been Launched—And the HuaHong Macro-Force Materials Supply-Demand Matchmaking Conference Was Successfully Held.

On February 25, 2014, the launch ceremony for the “Mass Production and Application Engineering of Key Equipment and Materials for Domestic Integrated Circuits” project, along with a supply-and-demand matchmaking meeting aimed at promoting the large-scale application of domestically produced materials through cooperation between material companies and HuaHong Macro, was successfully held in Shanghai. Academician Wang Xi, Chairman of the Integrated Circuit Materials Industry Technology Innovation Strategic Alliance, attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Professor Wang Zhengping, known as the “Father of Modern Semiconductor Packaging,” Elected as a Foreign Academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering

On December 19, 2013, the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering announced the list of newly elected academicians. Professor Wang Zhengping was elected as a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. Professor Wang Zhengping is a Chair Professor of Electronic Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, and a foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering. He has long been engaged in research on electronic packaging. For his pioneering contributions to this field over several decades, he was awarded by IEEE the IEEE Component, Packaging, and Manufacturing Technology Award—the highest honor in the field of electronic packaging—and is widely recognized in the industry as the “Father of Modern Semiconductor Packaging.” Professor Wang is a pioneer in plastic encapsulation technology.

A Decade of China’s Emerging Semiconductor Materials Over the past decade, China’s semiconductor materials industry has seen the emergence of a number of new semiconductor materials companies, including Jiangfeng Electronics, Shanghai New-Ao, Shanghai Xinyang, Nanjing University Optoelectronics, Beijing Kehua, and Anji Microelectronics. These domestically nurtured Chinese materials companies, after navigating the fearless yet arduous early stages and enduring the confusion and struggles during the global financial crisis, entered a turning point toward positive development starting in 2009. Over the past decade, they have undergone the trials of growth and successfully weathered the challenges of the survival phase. In 2011, the Japanese tsunami prompted the global semiconductor industry to rethink the reliability of its supply chains.

The special projects “R&D and Industrialization of 200mm SOI Wafers” and “Research on Novel Silicon-Based Strain Materials,” undertaken by the alliance’s member units, have successfully passed acceptance testing.
