On September 21, 2017, the Cooperation Forum for Domestic Equipment Suppliers of Silicon-Based OLED Display Technology was successfully held at the headquarters building of Shanghai Shiyi Information Technology Co., Ltd., located in the Pudong New Area of Shanghai. The forum was co-organized by Shanghai Shiyi and the Strategic Alliance for Technological Innovation in the Integrated Circuit Materials and Components Industry. The forum was jointly chaired by Ms. Shi Ying, Secretary-General of the Alliance, and Mr. Gu Tie, President of Shanghai Shiyi. More than ten leading domestic equipment suppliers, including Northern Hi-Tech, Shanghai Micro-Assembly, Shenyang Xinyuan, Top-Jing Technology, Wuhan Jingce, and ZhiChun Technology, attended the forum.
Mr. Gu Tie provided the attending guests with a detailed introduction to the application areas, market prospects, and technical features of silicon-based OLED products. He pointed out that silicon-based OLED, as an emerging branch of display technology, boasts high resolution and high integration, making it highly promising in fields such as AR and VR. Leading domestic and international companies—including Microsoft, Google, Apple, Huawei, and Lenovo—have all expressed strong optimism about the application of silicon-based OLED in products like smart glasses and helmet displays. The silicon-based OLED project undertaken by Shanghai Shiyi integrates semiconductor manufacturing technology with OLED manufacturing technology, thereby posing numerous unprecedented requirements for production equipment. This necessitates joint development of equipment and processes by Shiyi and various manufacturers, thus driving forward the advancement of silicon-based OLED technology.
Secretary-General Shi Ying pointed out that silicon-based OLED display technology represents both a new direction for display technology development and an emerging泛-semiconductor industry. Silicon-based OLED technology does not strive for the most advanced semiconductor manufacturing processes, yet it has numerous customized equipment requirements—making it an ideal niche for domestically produced equipment to enter. By seizing this opportunity, domestic equipment manufacturers can not only gain a head start in the specialized silicon-based OLED segment but also lay a solid foundation for future entry into the large-scale glass-substrate LCD and OLED flat-panel display manufacturing sector. Secretary-General Shi Ying encouraged all participating organizations to do their utmost to fully support the Shanghai Vision-OLED silicon-based OLED project, thereby achieving win-win cooperation.
Mr. Kong Jie, Vice President of Shanghai Visionary, then provided the attending manufacturers with a detailed introduction to the company’s founding background, core team, and an overview of the Hefei production facility construction project, including its timeline. He emphasized that Visionary, as China’s first company committed to the large-scale production of silicon-based OLED products, is determined to move from being a follower to a leader in silicon-based OLED technology while significantly reducing costs, thereby truly opening the door for silicon-based OLED products to enter the consumer market. Following this, Mr. Ju Yuhuan, Director of Process Technology at Shanghai Visionary, introduced the process flow of Visionary’s products and the detailed equipment requirements, and also shared his outlook on next-generation technologies. During the subsequent breakout session, the technical team from Shanghai Visionary and technical experts from various participating organizations engaged in in-depth discussions, achieving numerous important results and reaching consensus on equipment R&D and equipment improvements for the project. After successfully completing all agenda items, the forum came to a smooth close.
The holding of this forum has played a significant role in bringing Shiyi and domestic suppliers closer together and enhancing mutual understanding, thus laying a solid foundation for closer cooperation in the future.
[Background Information]
Shanghai Shiyi Information Technology Co., Ltd. was established in October 2016 and is one of China’s leading companies specializing in the development of silicon-based OLED micro-display technology. The company’s founder and chairman, Mr. Gu Tie, leads a technical and management team composed of top experts and scholars from both domestic and international display industries. The team has achieved maturity in areas such as operational management, process technology development, and capital operations.
Silicon-based OLED microdisplays are active-matrix organic light-emitting diode displays fabricated using single-crystal silicon as the active driving backplane. They offer numerous advantages, including high resolution, high integration density, low power consumption, small size, and light weight.
On September 1, 2017, Shanghai Shiyi Information Technology Co., Ltd. signed a project agreement with the Management Committee of Hefei Xinzhanguan District, planning a total investment of 2 billion yuan to build a silicon-based OLED production base with a designed capacity of 6,000 12-inch wafers per month. The project site is located within the Hefei Comprehensive Bonded Zone. Upon completion, the project is expected to produce 20 million micro-display devices annually, making it the world's largest silicon-based OLED micro-display device manufacturing base. These products will primarily be used in near-eye display systems for applications such as helmet displays, smart glasses, electronic viewfinders, VR/AR, and other ultra-small, high-resolution display fields.
Shi Ying, Secretary-General of the Strategic Alliance for Technological Innovation in the Integrated Circuit Materials and Components Industry, Gu Tie, Chairman of Shanghai Shiyah Information Technology Co., Ltd., Wang Wensong, Vice Mayor of Hefei Municipal Government, Secretary of the Party Working Committee and Director of the Management Committee of the Xinzhancheng High-tech Zone, and Wang Houliang, Deputy Director of the Anhui Provincial Commission of Economy and Information Technology, among other leaders, attended the signing ceremony.
