Recently, the Chinese Academy of Sciences announced the list of newly elected academicians for 2017. Yang Deren, Deputy Director of the Alliance Expert Advisory Committee, expert of the General Group for Special Project 02, and Professor at the College of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.

Professor Yang Deren has long been engaged in research on silicon single-crystal materials for ultra-large-scale integrated circuits, silicon materials for solar photovoltaic applications, silicon-based optoelectronic materials and devices, nanoscale silicon, and nanoscale semiconductor materials.

His academic contributions include primarily research on semiconductor silicon materials, for which he has achieved a series of innovative results. He proposed a novel approach to controlling microdefects in Czochralski-grown silicon single crystals used in ultra-large-scale integrated circuits through nitrogen doping, systematically addressing the fundamental scientific issues related to nitrogen-induced defects and thereby promoting their widespread adoption internationally. He also proposed a concept for controlling lattice distortion through trace amounts of germanium doping, developed a series of technologies for growing silicon crystals doped with trace amounts of germanium, systematically resolved key scientific problems associated with these silicon crystals, and enabled their practical application. Furthermore, he conducted research on the preparation, structure, and properties of nanoscale silicon and other materials, successfully synthesizing novel nanoscale semiconductor materials such as nanoscale silicon tubes, thus providing a material foundation for device research and applications. He has published over 680 SCI papers, co-authored five English-language books, and been granted more than 130 national invention patents.

Academician Yang Deren stated that being elected as an academician is merely a new starting point. My research focuses primarily on the field of semiconductor materials, and more than 90 percent of electronic products are related to silicon materials. I hope to make even more innovative contributions in my field of work. I’d like to emphasize particularly that this achievement is not due to my efforts alone—it’s the result of the collective hard work of our entire team.

Attached is Yang Deren’s resume:

Yang Deren, born in April 1964, is from Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province. He graduated with a degree in Semiconductor Materials from Zhejiang University. Currently, he is a professor at the College of Materials Science and Engineering at Zhejiang University, director of the State Key Laboratory of Silicon Materials at Zhejiang University, and a doctoral supervisor. In 2017, he was elected as an academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
