China’s semiconductor industry is booming, and the materials sector is not lagging behind.

At the 2020 China Semiconductor Materials Innovation Conference, Ye Tianchun, Director of the Institute of Microelectronics at the Chinese Academy of Sciences, stated that while China’s entire semiconductor industry is booming, the domestic semiconductor materials industry is actually keeping pace and not lagging behind.

Ye Tianchun pointed out that in recent years, people have witnessed the challenging development history of China's semiconductor materials industry. Today, the variety of products has grown steadily, enabling them not only to enter domestic production lines but also to successfully penetrate the international market.

“You could say that throughout the booming development of the entire semiconductor industry, the domestic materials sector has not held the industry back—in fact, in some areas it has even achieved remarkable results. This is the result of everyone’s joint efforts,” said Ye Tianchun.

Ye Tianchun also noted that, in addition to facing new challenges, China’s semiconductor industry is embracing new opportunities. The complex international situation has placed significant pressure on China’s integrated circuit industry. How to expand upstream and downstream sectors—including equipment and materials—is a major challenge for the entire industry, yet it also presents an opportunity.

Finally, Ye Tianchun pointed out four key areas that the Chinese semiconductor materials industry needs to focus on:

First, in the past, our focus was on laying the foundation and adopting a holistic approach. But now, we must center our efforts on products, industries, and customers, and remain committed to innovation.

II. Dedicated to long-term supply and bulk deliveries, fostering stable customer relationships.

3. Persist in product development and enhance product competitiveness.

Fourth, we must uphold international cooperation. The semiconductor industry has already embraced a globalized trend, and it is increasingly difficult to go against this tide. China’s semiconductor industry needs to continue cooperating with Europe, Japan, and South Korea, while also maintaining its collaboration with the United States.
