Amkor Seizes Semiconductor Opportunities in Mainland China, Sets Up MEMS Packaging and Testing Line in Shanghai
Global second-largest packaging and testing firm, U.S.-based Amkor, has also decided to seize the growth opportunities in China’s semiconductor market. It announced the launch of a new packaging line for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and sensors in Shanghai, bringing its services closer to customers and enabling them to capture a larger share of the Chinese market. Amkor emphasized that this strategic move is driven by the rapid growth in demand for sensors in China’s smart phones, IoT devices, and smart vehicles. John Donaghey, Vice President of Amkor’s Mainstream Products Division, noted that the development of MEMS and sensors requires close collaboration between component engineers and packaging specialists. With the opening of this new packaging line in Shanghai, Amkor is positioning itself to better serve the Chinese market.

Eckel emphasized that this layout is driven by the rapid growth in sensors for smartphones, IoT devices, and smart cars on the Chinese mainland.
John Donaghey, Vice President of Aikang’s Mainstream Products Division, said that the development of MEMS and sensors requires close collaboration between component technicians and packaging engineers. Aikang has launched a new packaging line in Shanghai, enabling it to provide better service to customers in the Greater China region and internationally.
Currently, Aikang’s primary MEMS and sensor packaging operations are concentrated in the Philippines. Since 2011, the company has cumulatively produced over 2.1 billion MEMS and sensors.
Aiker stated that Shanghai’s brand-new MEMS and sensor production line in the future will draw on the Philippines’ experience by adopting standardized strip-type packaging processes and cutting-edge testing methods. It will integrate more functions into a single MEMS component package, enabling the company to help customers capture market opportunities in mainland China’s smart phone, IoT, and automotive electronics sectors.
