TSMC's Nanjing plant begins construction; mass production of 16-nanometer process technology will start next year.
On the 7th, TSMC’s Nanjing plant held a groundbreaking ceremony, officially announcing the start of construction and marking the launch of actual factory building. Mass production using the 16-nanometer process is expected to begin in the second half of 2018, with an initial monthly production capacity of 20,000 wafers. TSMC’s Nanjing facility is located in the Qiaolin area of the Pukou Economic Development Zone in the Jiangbei New Area. The site covers an area of 136,000 ping, with a land-use right duration of 50 years. TSMC plans to invest 3 billion U.S. dollars in the Jiangbei New Area to build this plant. Industry analysts predict that once the Nanjing plant goes into operation, TSMC’s global market share for wafers will rise from 55% to 57%. TSMC’s 3-billion-dollar investment is expected to stimulate industrial development worth over 30 billion U.S. dollars.

Recently, Luo Zhenqiu, General Manager of TSMC’s Nanjing plant, stated in the media that TSMC is an open platform that strives to achieve localization to the greatest extent possible. From talent recruitment to upstream design and downstream packaging and testing, TSMC hopes to collaborate closely with mainland China.
Leveraging TSMC’s strengths, Nanjing aims to establish a national-level integrated circuit hub on the Chinese mainland, with plans to build a “trillion-yuan” industrial base within four years. Luo Qun, Deputy Director of the Jiangbei New Area Management Committee, stated that the Jiangbei New Area is currently setting up a Global Smart Design Center and will accelerate the development of integrated circuits, positioning the area as the next major integrated circuit industry hub on the mainland following Shanghai Zhangjiang.
Following the groundbreaking ceremony, the new 12-inch wafer fab and design service center will officially break ground, marking the start of substantial construction work. Production using the 16-nanometer process is expected to begin in the second half of 2018, with full production capacity reached by 2019. This marks the third 12-inch wafer fab established by Taiwanese companies in mainland China, following UMC and Powerchip.
